USpain's main institutional partner is the University of Valencia, one of Spain's oldest institutions of higher education. Since its founding in 1499, the University has become a world-renown center of research, investigation and learning, with over 3 separate campuses, 90 academic departments and more than 15 interdisciplinary institutes throughout the city.

Students can take core classes in Spanish language, literature and culture at the University's International Course in Hispanic Studies, located in its state-of-the art Centro de Idiomas on the Tarongers campus. You may be able to take more advanced courses taught in Spanish or in English at the University's central Blasco Ibáñez campus, pending the approval of your home campus, the University of Valencia and USpain.

In addition to ICHS core courses, you'll be able to take specialized and enriched courses with USpain's degreed, expert faculty, including the USpain's Field Seminar Mediterranean Environment, History &B Cultures. Here, you'll visit sites, meet experts and learn about Valencia's historic, cultural, civic, economic and environmental importance in the greater Mediterranean region. We tailor seminar visits and invitations to meet the interests of our Field Seminar participants, so if you'd like to study a particular topic, let us know!

If you are interested in taking additional classes, either within or outside of the ICHS and/or USpain, consult with your home campus advisor and Dr. Ancos to make sure that a) these classes meet your home-campus degree requirements; b) your home campus will accept credit earned in these classes; and c) you feel comfortable taking outside classes in addition to those in the USpain program.

We are always willing to collaborate with your home campus to ensure that you earn the maximum amount of credits needed to reach your academic goals as a USpain student, but it is your responsibility to ensure that your home campus agrees to accept your course credits prior to registration with ICHS and USpain!

If you would like to pursue an Honors project or independent research in Valencia, you can do so as an extension of your coursework at ICHS or as part of USpain's Field Seminar. If you would like your research to count towards an Honors, major or certificate requirement, we request the consent and collaboration of your on-campus faculty advisor prior to registration. Some areas of field research include:

  • Mediterranean history (from Roman Empire to European Union)

  • Valencia's cultural heritage (UNESCO sites and intangibles)

  • European architecture (cathedrals to Calatrava)

  • Civil engineering (the "2020 Valencia Strategy")

  • Economics and environment (the agronomy of the Albufera)

  • International marketing (the Feria and its exhibitions)

  • Public health (the European Connected Health Alliance)

  • Diversity in education (public, private, international and bilingual)

At USpain, you'll work with award-winning teachers who have PhDs in Spanish and are experts in their field. We'll help you achieve your academic goals outside of class through one-on-one advising, tutoring and support.
